Krill Design presents the first circular design lamp made from 100% orange peels.
The elegant, sleek and sustainable Ohmie lamp is nothing more, nothing less than revolutionary.
Each lamp is made from the discarded peels of two or three oranges sourced from a family-owned food producer in the Messina province of Sicily.
Ohmie answers the need for a smarter way to manage waste from the food chain and the necessity to innovate design so that “sustainable” will stop being an adjective and will become the norm.
Through material research, Krill has developed new innovative materials, as well as new way of thinking.
Ohmie’s raw material is produced from non-edible parts of oranges produced in Southern Italy.
A velvety and sturdy material results from mixing orange peels and a biopolymeric base, holding a strong memory of its origin.
Plus, it’s fully compostable.
From the orange-skin pattern, on the outer surface, to the thin layers from 3D printing and its smell, Krill reminisced the of baking cookies with nonna (grandma) or picking ripe oranges in childhood summers.
The design of Ohmie makes it stand out as a genuine product by using the least amount of material possible; being as lightweight as its carbon footprint; by having a patterned surface; comprising and an angled light beam for a flexible user experience.
To have a unique and single body, Ohmie is specifically engineered, granting advantages regarding design, material savings and complete avoidance of production waste.
The innovative and unique design in 23cm of height and 150gr.
In this process, Ohmie comes to life through the deposition of one single melted filament of biomaterial in a continuous spiral-like movement, with a technique called “Vase Mode,” gifting Ohmie with its characteristic ribbed feel.
The aim behind Ohmie The Orange Lamp and Krill Design’s work is the repurposing of organic waste from the food industry, through a process of Circular Economy, transforming Nature’s resources into eco-design products.
