Taichung, Taiwan
Joshua J. Pan and his design team at JJP Architects and Planners have delivered the new Giant Headquarters project, which undoubtedly has become an instant urban landmark.
In terms of architectural design, the building form is dynamically sculpted to recall Giant’s technological prowess, while its curvaceous shape and sustainable design features evoke the simplicity and eco-friendliness of the bicycle.
The end product is a design that is uniquely tailored for Giant.
Located within the Phase 5 development of the Taichung Campus of the Central Taiwan Science Park, at the base of Datu Mountain, the project consists of a 15-story R&D and office tower and a 3-story exhibition hall, connected by an underground parking garage, with a total gross floor area of approximately 33,000m².
The tower design takes full advantage of its unobstructed surroundings with floor-to-ceiling glazing on three sides and a generous 4.5m floor height to allow ample natural light.
Appropriate shading is provided by the architecturally expressive undulating slab covers and deep south-facing balconies. The balconies also afford each office floor an outdoor place of respite.
The exhibition hall features approximately 3,700 m² of dedicated exhibition space on two floors, while the third floor is utilized for office and storage purposes. ‘
A grand set of exterior steps leads to the main entrance on the second floor. Once inside, the fluid interior spatial sequence and circulation pattern fully complement the architectural design.
The landscape design is conceived as a natural extension of the architectural design. Elements such as directional curving paving patterns and bicycle-friendly features integrate well with the surrounding environment.
The highlight of the outdoor spaces is the activity plaza that is buttressed by the two buildings and ideally configured for exhibitions and performances.
