iRhythm’s Zio ECG Monitor reimagines the traditional heart monitor as a sleek, discreet, and highly accurate wearable integrating AI-powered analytics to help clinicians interpret the collected data efficiently and accurately.
Designed to detect irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), it continuously records heart activity for up to 14 days—providing physicians with more data than traditional Holter monitors, and patients with vastly improved comfort and convenience.
Recognized for its groundbreaking impact in the field of wearable medical technology and design, the Zio ECG Monitor has been awarded a 2024 Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture, Design, and Urban Studies.
iRhythm design team has placed a premium on both form and function.
The device’s minimalist design is not only ergonomic and water-resistant, but also almost unnoticeable on the body—reducing stigma and encouraging compliance.
One of the unique design features compared with other wearables — is the introduction of a dermal adhesive structure that is asymmetric.
One side is adhered upward while the other is adhered downward.
This strategic thinking considered where gravitational forces would pull over time and where it was more powerful to put in adhesive capabilities and surface area.
Another pain-point the new device addressed is the challenge of moisture absorption with wearable adhesive-based devices in humid climates.
Zio monitor introduced a unique set of perforations within its hydrocolloid adhesive to allow moisture to transpire.
Moving that sweat away from the patient prevents the carboxymethyl cellulose in the adhesive from absorbing the moisture, which changes the geometry of the adhesive and how it adheres to the patient.
By incorporating features for potential connectivity and considering sustainability initiatives like reusable components, the Zio monitor is designed to adapt to future healthcare landscapes.
This cutting-edge wearable technology sets a new standard for patient-centered care, offering a promising future for the early detection and management of heart arrhythmias.
