Founded in Chicago in 1950 by Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames, GOOD DESIGN remains the oldest and most established awards program for the most innovative and visionary new product design worldwide.
For over 70 years now, GOOD DESIGN has been given to everything and anything from a NASA spaceship to a paper clip.
In 2022, over 1,200 new product designs and graphics from over 50 nations were recognized with the distinguished GOOD DESIGN Award.
The world’s most prominent FORTUNE 500 companies use the GOOD DESIGN logo in the branding of their products, which has become a strong and effective mark of public recognition of Design Excellence globally.
“This year’s awarded buildings and products,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, Architecture Criitic and Museum President/CEO, The Chicago Athenaeum, “seek to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of building occupants and product users, thereby improving building performance and adding a sustainable alternative to day-to-day items. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments.”
“According to the World Commission on the Environment and Development, sustainability is a form of development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Sustainable design, as demonstrated in this year’s GREEN GOOD DESIGN Awards shares that big-picture view of how our choices affect more than the present.
“Effective sustainable design is a comprehensive approach to selecting and integrating products and processes that account for long-term consumer satisfaction and environmental conservation,” continues Narkiewicz-Laine.
“Sustainability is as much about process as it is about product. Seeing design as a process empowers designers and manufacturers to better evaluate and anticipate the environmental, economic and social impacts and costs of building and consumer products.”
“Bigger-picture evaluations at the start of a project lead to better long-term decisions—and that leads to greater overall success.”
For 2023, GREEN GOOD DESIGN awarded buildings, urban plans, and product design from the following 32 nations: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, México, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Singapore, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam.
