Hangzhou, China
Designed by Jin Xin with his team from Zhejiang University Urban-Rural Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd. and associate architect Zhang Jialiang, Haimen Shishan Square, also known as Haimen City Sports Service Complex, provides the city with spaces for sports and leisure, culture and art, including a unique sports park on the roof, air track, walkway and indoor swimming and basketball halls.
Haimen Shishan Square is the most important urban renewal project in Haimen District, in the central core of this contrasting old city.
The design concept intended to reduce the building proportion and increase site planning.
The result is an open, ‘street life’ building with rich spatial levels and strong commercial vitality.
Haimen Shishan Square has recently been awarded a 2022 International Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
The construction with its clear forms and stacked volumes contrasts the crowded, disorderly old city center.
An immense sports park complete with various playing fields and track were built on the podium roof.
The project hosts sports and leisure, culture and art, creative business, and other spaces for interaction rooted in everyday life.
With the opening of Shishan Square, it has become the most active business center in Haimen, and its unique sports park on the roof, air track, walkway and indoor swimming and basketball hall have also become a new national fitness “internet celebrity” venue in Haimen.
The original “old” space of the old city shows the unique charm of a new lifestyle supported by culture and combined with landscape design.
