Guangzhou, China
Commissioned by the Nanchang Natural Resources Bureau, Nanchang Central City Urban Color Planning is a project that designs an urban color scheme for the city of Nanchang by Guo Hongyu along with his design team at Guangzhou University & Guangzhou Hongyu Architectural Design Co., Ltd.
The centrally located city of Nanchang is a famous historical and cultural city in China.
In order to build a distinctive urban image for Nanchang, the designers of Guangzhou University & Guangzhou Hongyu Architectural Design Co., Lt were entrusted by Nanchang Natural Resources Bureau to carry out an urban ‘color planning’ of Nanchang.
Nanchang Central City Urban Color Planning has recently been awarded a 2022 International Architecture Awards Honorable Mention by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
The designers looked for a color range suitable for the local climate characteristics by analyzing the light and extracting local color genes from Nanchang’s beautiful landscape environment, such as red soil, blue and white, porcelain and brass.
Four color systems of warm jade gray, sky cyan, golden autumn color and Dai color were extracted, which established a color spectrum with warm jade sky cyan as the main color, rosy purple as the auxiliary color, and gilt gold as the ornament color.
Combined with the characteristics of urban spatial structure and functional attributes, urban color recommendations were applied to the facade of urban buildings.
The designers even planned the spatial structure of the urban color, guiding the spatial distribution and change of hue, light, and chromaticity of urban color.
They designed the urban color image of key sections such as the riverside landscape belt, and formulated urban color guidelines and plans.
In addition, in combination with the recommended urban color spectrum, the designers formulated the guidelines for building materials to match the recommended colosr, so that the recommended chromatography could be implemented more effectively.
In this project, the designers were committed to exploring the color gene of Nanchang’s traditional culture and natural environment, deriving and innovatively applying it to urban space.
With this project establishing an urban color plan achieves the goal of establishing Nanchang characteristics with architectural color features and telling Nanchang stories in a language of color.
