Organized by Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, the Future House International Residential Awards® arise from the convergence of residential design and architectural vision with the aim of championing and honoring the latest cutting-edge design that define the new domestic landscape of the 21st-century worldwide.
The most inspiring iconic residential architecture for single family homes, multi-family housing, mixed-use apartment buildings, sky towers, restoration and renovation projects, extensions, interior design, affordable housing, and more from the world’s best architects is celebrated at an exclusive exhibition and awards ceremony set to take place in Athens, Greece, December 8.
From new luxury single family villas by MASK Architects, Jonathan Levi Architects, Desai Chia Architecture, Jensen Architects, and Swatt Miers Architects to stunning state-of-the-art residential high-rise buildings designed by Norman Foster, Mecanoo, Henriquez Partners Architects, NAC Arquitectos, Andrés Bustamante Arrieta, Elkus Manfredi Architects, Orange Architects, and BLUR Workshop, Future House Awards celebrate the finest new constructions, urban planning ventures, and landscape architecture projects of 2023, offering contemporary perspectives on their respective country’s architecture, design, culture, and societal developments.
In 2023, Future House Awards has been a unique opportunity to showcase new, groundbreaking, and cutting-edge private houses, apartments, vacation homes,
residential additions, multi-family housing, restoration/renovations, sustainable and affordable housing before a global audience.
This year, the 100 plus award-winning buildings and urban planning projects are spread across 40 countries—from Uganda to Taiwan, from Miami to Egypt.
“With the world changing faster than ever, we’re seeing many innovations and new technologies that rapidly transform how we design, build, and live to redefine the new domestic landscape,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, President/CEO, The Chicago Athenaeum.
“In Future House, that landscape is constantly evolving and is expected to bring fascinating developments from eco-friendly features to integrating smart technology as architectural trends in this decade continue to revolutionize how we think about our living spaces.”
“Future Houses may also include elements such as curved lines, rounded forms, and unconventional volumes,” explains Narkiewicz-Laine.
“They may also feature asymmetry, free-form shapes, open floor plans, and an abundance of large windows.’ “Contemporary homes built with sustainability in mind may incorporate green roofs, living walls, integrated smart home technology and customizable LED lighting, and careful integration into the existing landscape.”
“Future Homes can look radically different from one another, and sometimes from anything that has come before.”
“Rapidly evolving building technologies and materials increase innovation not only in terms of stylistic possibilities, but by helping to bolster green building practices that are a priority for today’s architects.”
In terms of the “visionary luxury,” MASK architects’ Eagle Mansion Signature Villa in Soul Luxury Beach Resort at North Coast, Egypt for
Mohamed Alabbar, the Emirati businessman who is best known as the founder of Emaar Properties, floats on the artificial hills, to almost create a sense of “floating villa” with the aim to design and create a sleek and flush, fresh looking aesthetically designed resort house.
Jensen Architects’ Stanford Residence in partnership with architect Johanna Grawunder in Stanford, California remodels one of the university’s modest faculty homes for IDEO founder David Kelley into a stealth ranch-style home, stunningly paired back to the essential lines of its suburban vernacular, and painted shadow grey. Its handsome new features are expressed as subtly disorienting counterpoints—a large, concealed pivoting front door, a curved protrusion screening a bedroom patio, and an abstracted “barn” workshop addition.
Other single family residential solutions improve upon the traditional house using a combination of older vernacular materials combined with new technology such as Minimhouse in Fribourg, Switzerland by U15 Architecture, Junegrass House in Jackson, Wyoming by Messana O’ Rorke, MUU50 House in Izmir, Turkey by TEKE Architects Office, and Haus am See in Potsdam, Germany by Carlos Zwick Architekten BDA.
At the top of the list of residential remodeling is BarlisWedlick Architects conversion of a mid-century private residence called Beckoning Path in Armonk, New York, into a spectacular private wellness retreat where high-design-meets-high-performance construction.
Future House also awards new vibrant social and student university housing by Leers Weinzapfel Associates, Modus Studio, and Mackey Mitchell Architects, and Arquitectonica.
Echale International is also awarded for their “Inclusive and Sustainable Housing in Uganda” that provides housing developers with a methodology, tools, and support for delivering inclusive and sustainable homes at scale and profitably.
Matthew and Joanna Hofmann’s Living Vehicle 2024 HD-PRO is guided by the passion for freedom for a new residential mobile space designed for a lifestyle that is sustainable and a completely self-supporting and net-zero product.
“Many of the winning high-rise projects, across a broad range of design disciplines, ensures that the green design approach translates into credentials as a landmark buildings for sustainability-focused living,” continues Narkiewicz-Laine.
“Foster + Partners’ 50-story Ellinikon Riviera Tower in the Agios Kosmas Marina area in Athens for Lamda Development features distinctive ‘hanging gardens’ with dominant green spaces and water features, natural light, and unobstructed sea views, which, when built, will be the tallest green beachfront high-rise building in the whole of the Mediterranean.”
“Architects are thus actively working towards creating buildings that meet their occupants’ needs and positively impact the planet.”
