Berlin, Germany
Georg Gewers and Henry Pudewill of Gewers Pudewill have completed a new sculptural, high-rise office tower — the first in its neighborhood to rise more than seven stories— creating an inspiring atmosphere that perfectly matches the dynamic character of its intended occupant Zalando AG.
This “urban sculpture” consists of 2,500 workplaces, spacious conference areas, public dining areas, and, above all, plenty of room for inspiration, communication, and innovation.
Outfitted with only two floorplans, the tower will alternate these layouts as it ascends.
Two outdoor terraces will be installed on each level, oriented east and west, respectively, to allow for solar gain; northern and southern faces will be predominantly glazed as they frame city views.
The modern, design-driven office concepts inside will be endowed with an array of lounge and meeting spaces as well.
The 24 stories fold alternately to the sky and give the tower, which is about 97.5 meters high, its characteristic shape.
In order to maximally experience this unique location with all one’s senses, the building has glass facades and terraces on all floors.
An essential feature of Berlin high-rise buildings is, as here, the free-standing in the urban grid.
Although this prevents the formation of a city-typical skyline, it enables magnificent views over the city and a perception that can be seen from afar.
The creative solution for the Stream was the structuring of the large building with a meandering, upwardly folding concrete strip structure, which causes optical refraction of the large facade surfaces and adds to the metropolitan scale.
The material inside the building is composed of exposed concrete and wood, thus forming a solid infrastructure for future uses.
