New York City design studio Jumbo, founded by Justin Donnelly and Monling Lee, has launched two seating designs that follow their design ethics and interest in reductivism, minimalism, and simplicity.
Named The Snow Fence Chair and the Foldont Chair, both chair designs combine technical execution with playful and imaginative design elements, adding a touch of whimsy to functional furniture.
The designers reuse materials like snow fences and polypropylene, so their designs demonstrate innovative approaches to material usage in furniture design.
The Snow Fence chair was created during the pandemic as an inexpensive construction made of snow fence and jersey barriers that were repurposed to cordon off outdoor dining sheds and pedestrianize public streets.
As Jumbo explains, “The Snow Fence Chair continues this line of aesthetic inquiry, reimagining the flexible polypropylene membrane as a static loveseat.”
The Foldont chair is a rejection of the utilitarian chair, following the morphology of the common folding chair but using thick members and luxurious birdseye veneer.
Created in response to AI-generated image making, Foldont weighs over 50 pounds and refuses to fold.
