London, United Kingdom
“When developing this project, we had the goal of making spaces for creative activities of various kinds, including art, photography, technology, and communication,” states Alberto Veiga, founder, Barozzi Veiga.
“For this reason, we could not think of a more appropriate tenant than Ravensbourne University, whose courses and activities are deeply characterized by creativity.”
Shaped by Spanish architects Barozzi Veiga with interiors by East London studio Brinkworth, the new Institute for Creativity & Technology at Ravensbourne University is like a polished aluminum factory hall punctured asymmetrically with large industrial floor-to-ceiling windows.
The new institute is located within the Design District, London’s new purpose-built creative hub at the heart of the Greenwich Peninsula.
The four-storey building houses Ravensbourne University’s graduate program, a start-up incubator, a research lab and a workshop for its 200 students and staff, and the program comprises a start-up incubator, a research lab and a workshop equipped with prototyping resources and an AR-/VR lab, as well as an exhibition space.
The additional space means the University can add four new master studies.
The interiors designed by East London studio Brinkworth continue the industrial theme with robust materials such as powder-coated steel, birch ply and linoleum that function as room dividers or storage spaces.
The interior configuration is designed around the idea of flexibility, allowing the building to be transformed and adapted over time to become a maker space where creativity can strife.
The new building is one of two the architects designed for the district. A darker version of a similar design will be located on the other end of the creative community.
Two projects each by Selgas Cano Arquitectos, Mole Architects, 6A Architects, Architecture 00, Adam Khan Architects, HNNA, and David Kohn Architects are planned to open over the summer.
