Deniz Aslan and Sevim Aslan of DS Architecture have created the Pendik Public Garden, one of Toki̇ & Tümaş’ city park projects that includes the transformation of the old “ytong” area and a mine land, which improves the damaged area with nature restoration, featuring a very special topography and sweeping views.
Pendik Public Garden has recently been awarded a 2022 International Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
Pendik Public Garden is one of the last areas that can be rescued from urban pressure and has been rehabilitated to the Anatolian side of Istanbul both culturally and naturally.
In the project, a pond and water ecosystem that will be formed spontaneously was created by directing water to be collected by the slope of the land to the mine openings.
Additionally, it has been ensured that both the residents of the neighborhood and the city dwellers can walk, run, and rest in the grove ecosystem formed in a hill formation. In the different thematic niches and environments created, users of all ages can enjoy the space.
The mine in the garden, where the theme of children and young people is very legible, is a fully self-sufficient nature project that will bring new energy to the region.
In the park, the transformation of the pit into a lake ecosystem, turning the old dynamite storage area into a garden for children allows for very exciting activities.
The pit pond, which restores the poplar the reputation it deserves, also creates recreational potential with its free sitting elements, bridges reaching out to the water, and its overhangs and sitting area.
The Pendik Public Garden is sensitive to the socio-cultural structure of the immediate environment and plays a role in bringing open green areas to development.
It will be included in the city system with new natural spaces that will be fondly used by citizens with different characteristics.
