Merging cutting-edge design and eco-responsibility, Sungai Design and Mike Russek present the Ombak Lounge Chair that is made of discarded plastic bags that become a sheet material, with around 2,000 needed for every chair.
“Collecting and amassing plastic waste solves one part of the problem of plastic pollution, the second challenge is what to do with all of this plastic,” says Kelly Bencheghib, who co-founded Sungai Watch.
“As we collected hundreds of thousands of kilograms of plastics, we started to look at plastic as an excellent source material for everyday products we all need and use, from furniture to small goods to even art,” she adds.
Designed for the indoors, this piece doubles as a modern art piece that invites you to take a seat.
The chair is created to minimize material use and leave no offcuts.
The name of the chair, Ombak, means wave in Indonesian and the name references Sungai Design’s commitment to cleaning up rivers and oceans.
Sundai Design is taking steps to minimize its carbon footprint and implement processes to audit and track the sources of plastic used in its products.
This commitment to sustainability is crucial for reducing environmental impact and promoting responsible consumption and production practices.
