Sanya, Hainan, China
CLOU architects and Urban Architecture Design’s Sanya Farm Lab is a 4,500 square meter, four-story exhibition space located in the Nanfan High Tech District of Sanya, the southernmost city on tropical Hainan Island in China that aims to showcase research in action and thereby highlighting both the educational and lifestyle aspects of agricultural science.

Showcasing advanced scientific and technological agricultural processes that respond to the characteristic local climate, the multi-functional compound combines research, commercial, and educational presentation, as well as communal experiences and activities.
In the contemporary interpretation of a farm, the unique juxtaposition of office, lab, and exposition is represented within three key building blocks that vertically intersect.

Catering to a diverse audience of experts and tourists, adults and children, interlinked didactics transfer individual procedures into a comprehensive narrative: an invitation to discover, observe, understand, try, and taste.
Active and passive sustainability considerations feature distinctly in the external architectural expression and the internal spatial arrangement.
Along the notion of creating an exposed urban living room, outdoor and indoor spaces converge under an encompassing faceted façade and roof grid, while characteristic circulation elements link the individual functions across all levels into a continuous loop of education, exploration, and entertainment.
