Lithuanian designers Aurimas Lažinskas and Saulius Sestavickas draw their inspiration for the Muista Chair from the Lithuanian word ‘mùistytis’ – which means to fidget.
The birth of Muista was inspired by science. “Keep fidgeting, it might cancel out the negative effects of prolonged sitting” – this was the headline of an IFLScience article, triggering the idea of a simple ergonomic sitting solution, that wouldn’t compromise on movement.
It took a lot of fidgeting and head-scratching to come up with the perfect Muista.
Three years were spent meticulously designing, researching, testing and consulting various health specialists, until we launched the mass production in the fall of 2018.
Since then, Lažinskas has participated in international design fairs in Helsinki (Habitare), Cologne (IMM), Paris (Maison & Objet), Vienna, Zurich, Hamburg (Blickfang) and sold hundreds of Muistas, receiving nothing but positive feedback, both from health professionals and members of the public.
The chair is a two-in-one design that can be comfortably sat upon in bench of saddle positions, allowing sideways and front-to-back movement.
The chair also promotes multi-tasking.
The design team worked with physical therapists analyzing sitting conditions to promote strengthening the body’s core, facilitate the sense of balance, and exercise muscles—all by merely sitting.
The Muista chair is made of press-moulded birch or beech plywood with a high-density polyurethane foam seat and is perfect for home offices.
It is available with either a black or clear lacquer finish on the wood and black, blue or grey wool-blend fabric upholstery.
Their research is ongoing and our vision is clear – change the concept of sitting to encourage flexibility, balance, and movement. And make fidgeting great again.
