Canadian designer Yongwook Seong’s Miss Osculation is a lighting fixture inspired by the designer’s study of osculation, so-called, the kissing act in mathematics.
For its conception and design, this project has been awarded a prestigious 2020 Good Design Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
In geometry, osculation is the geometrical phenomenon where the curve is met with another surface in tangent.
The contact point where curves meet more closely is called the osculation circle.
In the case of the Miss Osculation lighting fixture, the osculation circle is represented as a glass led bulb, revealing a fragile relationship between the curved structure and the bulbs.
The glass bulbs are not “osculatable” with the curve due to their innate fragility, therefore retreating from the structure in reality.
