Osaka, Japan
Designed by architecture firm RAU, engineering consultancy DGMR, Tellart
design studio, and Japanese construction company Asanuma, the Netherlands’ impressive and conceptual pavilion for the 2025 EXPO that will take place in Osaka, Japan is dedicated to circular design and sustainable and healthy living environments.
The theme is “Common Ground: creating a new dawn” where the country will introduce new technologies that will use water power to generate zero-emission
energy, making energy more accessible to everyone.
“We are nearing the end of materials and fossil resources. Our solution is the circular design, with circular materials and zero-emission energy sources,” state RAU Architects.
“As the pavilion has water as its theme, this is reflected in the design of the façade, the roof and the fact that we consider water as emission-free energy. The entire pavilion is designed to be reassembled and is circular.”
The rising sun in the pavilion’s design symbolises unlimited clean energy, and the pavilion itself is also completely circular.

All materials are registered in a material passport on the Madaster platform.
Inside, guests take an interactive journey that builds to an immersive show that brings these transformative ideas to life.
Expo 2025 Osaka centers around the challenges facing a world where major crises relating to matters such as climate change and health will determine our quality of life.
These cross-border challenges require international cooperation. The Netherlands Pavilion is therefore intended as a place that brings together different perspectives and expertise to create joint solutions.
In addition to the Pavilion, the Netherlands has launched the “Road2Osaka” campaign to strengthen economic, political, and cultural ties with Japan and East Asia.
This campaign aims to co-create innovations under the “Common Ground” theme, reinforcing the Netherlands’ role in driving global energy transitions and fostering collaborative solutions for a resilient future.
