The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies today revealed over 150 winners of the prestigious International Architecture Awards that takes place every year to recognize the most significant and inspirational building and urban planning projects around the world.
A distinguished jury of international designers selected over 150 new buildings and urban planning projects to be honored at a special awards ceremony and Gala Dinner held at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece on September 9.
Founded in 2005 by The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre, the distinguished awards recognize the most significant and inspirational buildings of the year and set a global standard for architectural achievement worldwide.
The International Architecture Awards are open to any qualified architect for spaces anywhere in the world that exemplify design excellence and architectural ambition and deliver meaningful social impact to the public for which they serve.
This year, from a shortlist of over 450 submissions, the 150 plus award-winning buildings and urban planning projects are spread across 48 countries.
In addition to the 150 plus awarded projects another 50 honorable mentions were also cited.
This year’s winning projects range from significant cultural destinations such as Fuzhou Strait Culture and Art Centre and its beautifully detailed walkways in Fu Jian, China to new city infrastructure such as the elegant Eleftheria Square in the heart of Nicosia, Cyprus; from a stunning sky pool that connects two buildings in downtown London to the new Deformable Modularized COVID-19 Epidemic Prevention Hospital in Shanghai and a UNESCO cultural building in Greenland.
“This year’s winning projects,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, President/CEO of The Chicago Athenaeum, “show remarkable sensitivity to their surroundings and local cultures, inclusive design, and sustainable solutions.”
For 2022, awarded projects include new high rises and skyscrapers in Tel Aviv, Shanghai, Toronto, Barcelona, Shenzhen, Suzhou, and Tampa, Florida, as well as new airports, bridges, civic and community centers, exposition pavilions, corporate offices, schools and universities, museums and libraries, government and healthcare facilities, hotels, private homes and multi-family housing, public spaces, religious buildings, and significant new restorations and adaptive reuse projects.
“It is indeed a great moment when a recognition as important as this helps to bring attention to the remote corners of our incredibly connected but unknowing world, often projects that are born out of scarce resources, and projects for the care of people and communities destined to live in the fragile environment of a climate in flux.”
Winners of this year’s International Architecture Awards for Design Excellence include over 100 of the world’s most influential and established architecture practices in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North and South America including Zaha Hadid Architects, Kohn Pedersen Fox, Ennead Architects, SPEECH and Tchoban Voss Architects BDA,, J.
