Led by Sun Dayong and Wan Shuyan at Penda China, the design for the new canopy for the Haikou Wenming East Road Tunnel, which measures 4,380m at its full length (2,720m for the underground 6-lane dual carriageway), is the result of bionic design—taking elements of marine life as sculptural inspiration, and specifically using undulating white shells as a prototype in homage to the location by the sea.
