Kukuihaele, Hawaii, USA
Named King K Residence, this residential development by Patrick Tighe is designed as both a private residence and a creative retreat integrating sustainable architecture, natural ventilation, and panoramic views of the Pacific.
Drawing inspiration from Hawaiian hipped-roof structures, the residence reflects a deep respect for the island’s cultural heritage while embracing modern innovation.
Τhe King K Residence, acknowledging its innovative design and integration with the environment, has been awarded with a 2024 American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
A central courtyard serves as a protected outdoor area within the home, providing an intimate and inward-focused space amidst the lush surroundings.
The architectural design draws inspiration from traditional Hawaiian elements, particularly in its roof forms.
Featuring hipped roofs with exposed structures and deep overhangs, the design responds to the tropical climate with an environmentally friendly approach.
These roofs are not just functional but also integral to the design aesthetic, manipulating vaults and coffers to optimize light, air circulation, views, and sun protection.
Each roof is uniquely designed to correspond to specific interior functions and programming within the home.
The composition of the home is characterized by its roofscape, where aggregated roof volumes seem to float above the traditional single-family residential program.
This approach creates a distinctive architectural identity that harmonizes with the natural landscape and cultural heritage of the site, offering both functional spaces and a visually striking design that integrates with its surroundings.
