Paris, France
Situated in the Seine-Saint-Denis district of the city of Paris, the Olympic Village has been thoughtfully designed by Dominique Perrault and his design team to blend with the existing urban landscape along the riverbanks, combining residential and office spaces, extending over an area of 119,000 square meters and having 2,400 housing units.
The village is positioned to the north of Paris, spanning a 52-hectare area that crosses the areas of Saint-Ouen, Saint-Denis, and L’Ile-Saint-Denis.
The location choice for the village leverages the rich industrial heritage of the area while aiming to transform it into a vibrant community space, utilizing the iconic Cité du Cinéma as a focal point and symbol of the area’s revitalization and cultural significance.
The initial plan is for the village to transition into a new, permanent community within Paris, contributing to the city’s growth and diversification.
As Dominique Perrault explains, “The aim of this project is twofold. We wish to build an exemplary district for 2025, even for 2050, able to temporarily offer an exceptional welcome to the athletes and their delegations.”
“First and foremost, the urban reflection is engaged into long-term thinking on the constitution of a new part of the city, entrenched on its territory and geography.”
The natural undulating topography of the plot has been skillfully utilized in the design, incorporating expansive paths, promenades, and terraces throughout the area.
Envisioned as a “garden city,” the development consists of a series of blocks strategically arranged to maximize the benefits of daylight and to offer expansive views.
This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the development but also ensures that the living and working environments are bathed in natural light and connected to the outdoor spaces, reinforcing the concept of harmonious living with nature.
