Schwarzenberg, Austria
Designed by Jürgen Haller, the Bergfrieden Houses are located away from the hustle and bustle in the impressive mountain scenery of the Laternsertal in Vorarlberg.
The builders were able to purchase the property including the dilapidated guest house. They wanted to create a place to relax and meet.
Sustainable building, responsible handling of the regional building culture and the reference to the alpine cultural landscape were the major requests of the house-owners for this project.
One of the houses can be rented as a seminar or holiday home.
The new structures were carefully integrated into the existing context and built using a mixed construction method.
Closely connected to the existing situation of the historical water fountain on the forecourt, the ensemble is situated close to the street.
Its central place in the village structure looks natural and legitimate.
With rough-sawn and traditional wooden façades, two structures express a gently shimmering character.
The two-story building constructed in a mixed building structure is gently embedded in its nature.
All construction materials have been built in completely untreated.
The outside façade of the building consists of natural finish European spruce, the inside is made of simple European silver fir – thereby an excellent eco-balance is guaranteed.
The buildings are accessed via the spacious forecourt.
Protected by the incised crested areas, there is a connecting transition to the interior.
In order to do justice to the traditional building culture of the region, wood was used in the interior work and in the facades.
The adaptation and implementation in an economical, careful, and well-thought-out mixed construction made of wood and concrete cover all the requirements for a contemporary, sustainable energy standard.
Haller’s beautiful design follows traditional architecture with a clear design language, blending in harmoniously both with the existing buildings in the neighborhood and the surrounding countryside.
