The Sieni (mushroom) Table Lights were born from a creative collaboration between Finnish designer Esa Vesmanen of Pure Design and Japanese-based textile and clothing designer Akira Minagawa of mina perhonen, representing a harmonious fusion of Finnish and Japanese design sensibilities, resulting in a captivating blend of cultural influences and design philosophies.
The design has been awarded a Prize Design for Modern Furniture + Lighting 2023 by Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum for Architecture and Design as Best Table Light of the Year 2023.
Although Vesmanen is a purist and Minagawa is a romantic, the two share a deep reverence for nature and a desire to create enduring and emotive everyday objects.
FINOM x minä perhonen is a new, collaborative series of lights designed as sources for both light and dream. The Sieni (mushroom) shapes were drawn by Minagawa based on Vesmanen’s original FINOM light designs.
The lights are produced from flexible and durable aircraft plywood-veneer.
The material is just 0,4 mm thick which is why it’s semi-transparent and uses just a minimum amount of prestigious natural birch wood.
No toxic glues or varnish are used.
The carbon footprint of logistics is minimal as well as the light can be folded into a thin package that is light to carry.
Sieni celebrates the super thin birch veneer, playful mushroom form, and natural stone, casting an elegant and warm light around the table and into the hearts and minds of those who encounter them.
