The musician Brian Eno in collaboration with the Paul Stolper Gallery launched a limited edition turntable that changes colors creating ‘colorscapes’ as it plays.
Turntable II is an updated 2022 version and is a mesmerizing piece of design.
Brian Eno’s design approach was to create a piece of art rather than a mere record player and wanted to produce an object that, “when it doesn’t have to do anything in particular, like play a record, it is a sculpture.”
Turntable II can play 33 and 45rpm vinyl and is made up of a round platter and base, which change colors as the record plays, creating what Brian Eno calls ‘colorscapes,’ which are soft patterns of neon light that change randomly and slowly.
Brian Eno has been experimenting with light and sound since the late 1960s. As he states, “I’ve never ceased to be fascinated by the amazingly intricate, complex, and unpredictable results produced by simple deterministic systems. Out of simplicity, complexity arises.”
Turntable II is a collector’s item that can be enjoyed by a few as only 150 pieces are produced, and its launch price is 20,000 pounds.
