Founded in Chicago in 1950 by Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, and MoMA curator Edgar J. Kaufmann Jr., GOOD DESIGN® is internationally recognized as the ultimate, global mark for design excellence worldwide.
GOOD DESIGN is the world’s first and oldest and longest running design prize that honors design achievements in all its disciplines: from product, packaging, communication and service design, architecture, and interior architecture to user interface (UI), user experience (UX), and professional concept.
The highly-prized, highly anticipated, and highly-publicized awards are bestowed annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies annually.
Finnish/Lithuanian architecture and design critic, Christian Narkiewicz-Laine has served as GOOD DESIGN’s chief curator since 1987.
He is also the president/CEO of The Chicago Athenaeum.
In 2024, thousands of submissions were received by the Museum for product and environmental designs and graphics and packaging launched on the market between January 1, 2022 and June 1, 2024 from over 56 countries.
An international jury of design experts evaluated hundreds of submissions on four key design qualities: product function, aesthetics, ease of use, and responsibility/sustainability—the same criteria written in 1950.
From a short list of over 4,500 submissions, the entries were then judged on nine criteria, including degree of innovation, functionality, formal quality, ergonomics, durability, ecological compatibility, and symbolic and emotional content.
The final jury selected over 1,200 products and graphics worthy of the GOOD DESIGN Award for electronics, robotics, kitchen and bath products, household goods and appliances, furniture and lighting, medical, transportation, installations, environments, home and office products, personal products, new technologies, floor and wall covering, fabrics/textiles, architectural building products, recycling, safety and security, tabletop, tools, children and pet products, interactive design and mobile applications, sports and recreational designs, and graphics and packaging as a testament to the exceptional quality of the product design and the bold unwavering commitment of the designers and manufacturers behind them.
The 2024 edition recognized the creative scope and innovation of each submission.

For this 74th edition of GOOD DESIGN, award winners are honored and celebrated at the “Good Design Show,” which opens at The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies in Athens, Greece starting April 4 and continuing through May 2025.
A glamorous awards presentation and gala dinner is held at the foot of the Acropolis that same night.
