Lost Hills, California
The Lost Hills Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge aka the Wonder Bridge by Zoltan E. Pali of SPF:architects is a 308-foot bikeway and pedestrian bridge that spans across Highway 46 [Paso Robles Highway] and connects the Wonderful Park at the north to the Pre-school and College Prep Academy to the south.
The bridge’s plan is inspired by curling lizards’ tails and the flow of swirling water.
The resulting spiral shape allowed for a gentle transition and ease of ADA access from grade level to the required 20 foot high crossing.
The Wonder Brigde has been awarded a 2024 American Architecture Award by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
The bridge’s design is inspired by natural forms, such as the curl of a lizard’s tail and the flow of swirling water, creating a spiral shape that enhances its aesthetic appeal and functionality.
The crossing itself is slightly modified to accept the green railing/fence armature that transforms from a code required railing at the base of the bridge to a curved arched geometry culminating in a heart shape at the center of the bridge symbolizing community and its benefactor.
