Inspired by de Stijl’s Piet Mondrian’s neo-plasticism and architect Gerrit Rietveld’s Red Blue Chair, the 612 chair examines, explores and emphasizes the intersection of vertical and horizontal planes defined by and constrained within a cubic volume of 31” x 31” x 31”. Conceptually, the chair has been released from a block of solid, black material, yet memories of its 6 square faced, 12 edged, perfect cube origins remain.
612 utilizes everyday materials and reductive sculptural concepts to achieve intellectual yet functional results. Baltic birch plywood comprises the intersecting planes of the chair. Plywood surfaces are sprayed with a satin catalyzed lacquer. A variety of upholstery fabrics are envisioned for the chair with these submitted prototypes employing canvas.
The simplicity of the 6-12 is aimed toward mass production rather than hand-crafting. Achieving physical comfort was critical. In astrology 612 is an angel number representing order between balance and harmony. The dimensions of the cubic volume were determined through rough full-size mockups studying seat, arm rest, bolster relationships required to achieve order between human form and aesthetic concept.
